Today, we’re rolling out a new tool for developers and publishers to request Steam Keys, helping to ensure that the right type and quantity of keys are generated.
Over the last few years, we’ve seen an increase in the number of developers who accidently request the wrong number or type of Steam key. When we are reviewing Steam Key requests, these can look like mistakes, which often makes it take longer for the developer to get their keys while we review what is going on. The current system has led to developer confusion, and we want to make the key requesting process as straightforward as possible.
So we’ve redesigned the key request process to make it much more clear to developers which type of key they should be requesting. This new wizard will walk developers through the process of requesting keys and help them choose the right key for the job, whether that’s selling at retail, selling through other digital stores, running a beta, or sending keys to press or influencers for early review.
This new key request wizard replaces the previous key request tool, and can be found in the same place the previous tool lived.
We’re also updating the
Steam key documentation with more information on how to choose the right type of key to request along with some best practices and suggestions to help avoid common mistakes we've seen over the years. The updated documentation also now includes more clear guidelines for developers around requesting, selling, and managing Steam keys.
Steam keys will remain free to assist developers who want to sell games at retail, participate in bundles, and use keys to promote their game.
As always, please let us know what you think.
